Well-Child Checkups for Infants & Babies
Infancy is a time of tremendous growth and development. It also is the time when most immunizations are given and when many developmental disorders first begin to appear. For these reasons, frequent wellness exams are performed during infancy.
In an infant wellness exam, the pediatrician measures the baby’s weight, height, and head circumference. He or she listens to the infant’s heart and lungs, and checks the size and location of organs. Immunizations given during infancy vary according to state requirements. In general, childhood immunization follows a schedule recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
During infancy, most pediatricians also recommend that parents and caregivers begin keeping track of developmental milestones, such as babbling, sitting up, and walking. Although it is normal for children to reach certain milestones at different ages, significant delays or concerns about the child’s progress should be brought to the pediatrician’s attention at the next wellness exam or sooner.
Newborn screening tests look for developmental, genetic, and metabolic disorders in the newborn baby. This allows steps to be taken before symptoms develop. Most of these illnesses are very rare, but can be treated if caught early.
Your EPIC PRIMARY CARE doctor can perform exams at intervals beginning at 1 month, 2 month, 4 months, 6 months, 9 months, 12 months, 15 months, 18 months, 24 months, 30 months, and yearly thereafter.
