What is Emotional Wellness? According to the National Center for Emotional Wellness, it refers to an awareness, understanding, and acceptance of your emotions, and your ability to manage effectively through challenges and change.

In the wake of the need for emotional wellness nationwide, October is observed as the Emotional Wellness Month. This month (and every month) EPIC Health would like to spread awareness about gaining control of emotions to avoid unnecessary stress and experience positive emotions.

Any kind of emotional upset can make life miserable. The key to dealing with it lies in recognizing symptoms of distress and acting at the right time. Medication, lifestyle changes, and support can go a long way in dealing with negative emotions and thinking patterns.

Emotional well-being is no less important than physical well-being. In most cases, they are directly related. With mental or emotional problems come other health issues. And when you are unwell or going through body pain or other physical medical conditions, your emotional well-being is at risk.

What is emotional wellness?

Emotional wellness does not have a single universal definition, but it encompasses factors such as:

  • Feeling good about ourselves.
  • Being able to function well individually or in relationships.
  • Dealing with the ups and downs of life.
  • Coping with challenges and making the most of opportunities.
  • Feeling a connection to our community and surroundings.
  • Having control and freedom over our lives.
  • Having a sense of purpose and feeling valued.

When you are emotionally well, you can:

  • make the most of your potential
  • cope with life
  • play a full part in your family
  • function more effectively in your workplace, community, and among friends

One thing to understand is that emotional wellness does not mean being happy all the time. It doesn’t mean you won’t experience negative or painful emotions, such as grief, loss, or failure, which are a part of life. However, having a better understanding of it can help you lead a healthier life and improve your overall well-being.

How does stress affect your emotional wellness?

Some amount of stress is normal. But, if stress persists over a long period, it becomes a matter of concern. When stress starts interfering with your ability to live your life and causes larger emotional and physical problems, it’s time to seek treatment.

Chronic stress can increase your vulnerability to multiple conditions, such as depressive disorders, cardiovascular issues, obesity, hypertension, and diabetes. Since chronic diseases can take a long time to manifest, you may be unaware that stress is the contributing factor. Unhealthy practices like poor diet choices, drinking, smoking, or lack of physical activity can also increase the likelihood of severe health problems.

Mindfulness for emotional well-being

Techniques like mindfulness can boost emotional wellness and help manage stress healthily. They can also be used to reduce levels of anxiety and depression, which contribute to your mental and physical well-being.

Mindfulness helps us become more aware of our thoughts and feelings rather than being overwhelmed by them. It also makes us better to be able to manage those thoughts and feelings. Mindfulness can be used as a tool to manage your mental well-being.

We all go through times when we feel down, stressed, or anxious. Most of the time, those feelings disappear eventually. But sometimes they develop into a more severe problem. This can happen to anyone. Therefore, it’s essential to maintain your mental health.

Mindfulness

Manage stress and boost your well-being

You can choose to make your life better by establishing certain habits. Focus on practices that prevent negative thoughts. The following can improve your emotional as well as physical wellness:

  • Laugh! Laughing every day is great for your emotional wellness. Remember the saying, “laughter is the best medicine.” 😊
  • Hang out with positive people. Just like pessimism and sadness, happiness, too, is contagious.
  • Say “no” sometimes and make time for yourself. Work on your time management skills to handle avoidable loads of stress in your life.
  • Read books, seek therapy, participate in wellness forums or support groups. These types of support can go a long way in breaking free from emotional struggles.
  • Communicate openly with others. Those close to you can be an outlet to vent out undesirable emotions bottled up inside.
